Woman Hopes Walking Tour Will Revive the History of Holbrook St.

Danville, VA - A tour of Danville's Millionaire's row has been up and running since 2009, but one woman wanted more. That's why she is starting another tour in the city, focused around a different area, one she says is an overlooked, big part of the city's history.

Many folks know that Danville has a deep cultural history, but not everyone knows exactly what part Holbrook Street plays in that.

"This is the professional neighborhood back in the 50s. This is the area that many of our professionals, our dentists, and doctors, and lawyers on this street," tour organizer Paula Smith said.

On the surface, Holbrook Street might seem like an ordinary neighborhood, but the culture runs deep, which is why Joyce Wilburn was inspired to start a self-guided tour of the Holbrook-Ross Historic District.

"I would always think at that point why isn't there a tour of this neighborhood?" wonders Joyce Wilburn, Tour Guide for the Danville Historic Society's Walking Tour.

To bring the tour to life, Wilburn recruited Paula Smith to help scout out the street for long time residents. Nannie Armstrong remembers when the empty grass was full of kids playing miniature golf. And when this house doubled as the only restaurant around where African Americans could eat without the weight of segregation.

"This is a historic area. Where the leading black people lived in the past," Longtime Danville Resident Nannie Armstrong explained.

And as early as December, there will be a new addition for tour-goers.  Wilburn and Smith's twelve page, free booklet will become available to the public.

"There are a lot of visitors to Danville and they want to know the whole history," Wilburn said.

"Doing this tour brings back a lot of memories for me. And hopefully we can build it to be an interesting tour for any visitors to Danville" said Smith.
