The designation is awarded to Allstate agency owners who have consistently demonstrated excellence in delivering an accessible, knowledgeable and personal customer experience, and in achieving outstanding business results.

It is bestowed to less than one-third of Allstate’s nearly 12,000 agency owners across the country (27.9 percent), and to 25 percent of agencies in the Southeast Region.

-- Earl Mitchell, a funeral director at Sunset Funeral Home in Northport, was presented with a service pin in recognition of 50 years in the funeral industry during the 125th annual convention of the Alabama Funeral Directors Association in Point Clear, June 19-22.

Mitchell began his career in June 1961 with Spigner-Brown Service Funeral Home in Tuscaloosa and has since conducted thousands of funerals in the Tuscaloosa and Northport areas.

He has held every office of the AFDA, including president, and has served on various committees of the National Funeral Directors Association. He also has served on the board of directors of the Alabama Cemetery Association, and in 2000 received the association’s Member of the Year Award.

Mitchell served a four-year term as Tuscaloosa County Coroner and two four-year terms in the Alabama House of Representatives representing Northport and parts of Tuscaloosa and Pickens counties. While in office, he was selected as one of the 10 most outstanding legislators in the U.S. by the National Association of State Employees, received the University of Alabama Presidential Award and was named Legislator of the Year by the Alabama Nurses Association.

Mitchell and his wife, Kaye Eidson Mitchell, have three children and five grandchildren.

Paul D. Nelson, D.M.D., received a Gold Certificate during the Alabama Dental Association’s 2011 awards presentation on June 19. The certificate signifies 50 years of service in the profession of dentistry.

Nelson, now retired, is a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Dentistry and practiced general dentistry in Tuscaloosa for 54 years.

The awards presentation capped the association’s 142nd annual session, which was held at Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach, June 14-19.

-- Lisa Riley, a sales representative for Afflink Inc. in Tuscaloosa, has been elected to the board of directors of the Autism Society of Alabama.

Riley, the parent of a son with autism, will serve two, two-year terms on the board.

Funeral services will be held Saturday July 9, at 11 a.m. from Evans Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dugar Strickland officiating. Interment will be in the Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday July 8, at the funeral home. John Henry, Salvador Garcia, Matthew Standridge, Dwight Ward, Adam Reynolds, and Wayne Samples will be honored as pallbearers. I was so sorry to hear about Sandra Dowdy. Mrs. Dowdy will surely be missed by so many family and friends. She was so special to me growing up and to my son's father as well. Tracy always talks about Sandra playing the SPOONS!!! That's the one thing that stands out in his mind whenever Branson and Sandra are mentioned. When I was a youngster I always remember begging my mama to let me stay w/ Barbara McLeroy, & Sandra's daughter Amanda Mcleroy, and our many visits & funtimes we shared when Sandra visited!! Not only could Sandra play the spoons, but she was the only lady I ever met that could play a harmonica & made beautiful music! May you rest in peace Sandra Dowdy...
