Deer Park duo set to take stage Friday night at Lone Star Club

Next Friday night at Pasadena’s Lone Star Club, Deer Park residents Terry Anne and Steve Kuykendall will be performing with actor-turned-musician Larry Bagby.

The Kuykendall’s have a both have a varied musical past which started in their youth.

For Steve Kuykendall, his early inspirations came from his father playing in local bars. Kuykendall says back in the fifties and sixties before there were major record labels, local artists who had the ability to have their own records cut could submit their final records to local radios for consideration. He says it’s much more difficult now with major record labels controlling most of the industry. Kuykendall said that back in the 60’s and even during the 70’s, Houston-area artists generated their fair share of country and the fusion of country and rock-n-roll known as “Rock-a-Billy.”

Kuykendall says when he turned 18 and was old enough to get into a bar; he began to play guitar in bars in the area. It was during his early days playing the bar scene that he met a friend Johnny Garner who taught him how to play the bass guitar, something he has worked to perfect every since. At age 24, an opportunity came up to tour with country legend Eddy Raven. After the tour was over, Kuykendall went to work at the famous country bar Gilley’s, located in neighboring Pasadena, playing as member of the house matinee band. According to Kuykendall, he played in the band for several years. He says he would also play at a club owned by another country legend Johnny Lee, which is where Mamacitas restaurant is currently located. “When I was in my teens and twenties and drive up and down Spencer Highway from 146 to College and you would see 6-8 live bands playing,” said Kuykendall. “Even with the downshift in the economy, the Urban Cowboy craze kept the club business going for years.”

Urban Cowboy featured Hollywood veteran John Travolta as a young plant worker set in early 80’s Pasadena. The movie featured many scenes in Gilley’s night club.

During the late 80’s Kuykendall says he grew tired of the bar scene and decided to go back to college to be a chiropractor. After a short still playing again in 1990, he says he gave it up. He would eventually return to his musical roots a few years back when local communities began having more Opry-styled venues. “I started having fun with it again and it quit being a job,” he said. Kuykendall stills works as a Chiropractor who has an office in Pasadena.
