2 arrested in farm equipment thefts

The objects were stolen from locations in eight counties, including Marion, Alachua and Levy.

Paso Fino horse trainers Alvin Perez, 34, and Francisco Rivera-Ocasio, 44, were detained by separate agencies law enforcement.

Perez was arrested by agents of Marion, Wednesday and faces charges of dealing in stolen property. His friend, who is responsible for handling stolen goods and theft Grand, was arrested Thursday at Spring Hill after authorities found him locked in a house with her 8-year-old daughter.

The two men are linked to the theft and sale of more than $ 300,000 in horse trailers, horse carts extreme driving, zero turn mowers and utility all-terrain vehicles from locations in Hillsborough, Lake, Hernando, Marion , Sumter, Pasco, Alachua and Levy counties.

The latest theft involved a livestock trailer gooseneck and a Yamaha Rhino utility vehicle from Lake County, officials said.

According to authorities, the trailer was eventually connected to a red Ford F-350 pickup truck who fled the Sumter County deputies earlier this week.

Approximately $ 200 000 worth of merchandise was recovered by detectives.

They said the Paso Fino horse community has been assisting in the recovery of the items.

Law officers urge anyone who has purchased goods from these suspects to notify law enforcement.

Marion County Sheriff's Detective Gregory Spates said the investigation began with the thefts of six extreme-drive carriages and a 2007 Equispirit horse trailer from Ocala Downs in October 2010.

Spates said a groundskeeper found a Florida ID card that belongs to a man who said he had lost it at a Walmart.

When Spates and another detective went to the address on the card — in the Summerfield/Pedro area — they recovered a horse trailer that had been reported stolen.

That investigation, Spates said, led them to two farms in Anthony, where Perez was arrested on drug and gun charges. The gun charges were later dropped. Detectives recovered three stolen carriages from one of the farms. From there, Spates said, law officers received a tip that identified numerous other buyers.

Interviewing the buyers between October 2010 and February 2011, detectives recovered numerous pieces of mowers, tractors and vehicles. By then, officials said, Perez had bonded out of jail. They do not think he was directly involved in the thefts of the equipment.
