Business and pleasure
As a youngster, Tim Patton made regular summer trips to the Kingston area to visit his mother's homeland.
Now, the Bermuda native is giving his son, Campbell, 10, the same summer treat -- and it's paying off on the water.
Promising sailor Campbell Patton, 10, won the 10-and-under division in the Optimist fleet at CORK International this week and placed an impressive 25th overall in the 86-athlete fleet.
"We came here as children for the Canadian cottage experience," said Tim Patton, whose mother, Molly Freeman, grew up in Westport.
Freeman met her late husband, John Patton, a Bermuda native, while both were students at Queen's University. Eventuall y, they moved to the tiny Caribbean island, where they lived for 50 years.
But Freeman, who is now back in Kingston, never forgot her roots and ensured that her family got to enjoy the best of both worlds.
Tim, who has sailed in 23 world championships in the Etchells class, wanted his son to have a similar well-travelled upbringing. They've spent the past few summers at a cottage on Devil Lake, just south of Westport.
"It's a sensational location with a 250-foot waterfall and rapids nearby," Tim Patton said.
This year, Tim wanted his son to have the chance to compete in what he considers "the best place to sail in the middle of Canada."
Through some pre-trip research, Tim secured the services of top Kingston Laser sailor Robert Davis to coach his son.
"Robert has helped him tremendously," Tim Patton said. "Not so much with how to sail, but how to manage a race. He's really helped with strategy and tactics."
Campbell started working with Davis a couple of weeks before CORK International.
"He's a really great coach," the soft-spoken youngster said. "He's helped me with a lot of things."
Later, Tim quipped: "We've already put a retainer on Robert for next year."
Davis, the son of CORK executive director Marianne Davis, said it was a lot of fun to work with Campbell, who already had good skills.
"He's a good little sailor," Davis said. "He's only 10. If he keeps sailing the way he's sailing, he's definitely going to be a really good sailor."
Campbell exceeded his dad's expectations on the trip.
"He did very well," said Tim Patton, who figured his son would be doing well just to finish in the top half of the fleet. "I'm extremely pleased with him and for him.
