Ford Octane Academy In Search Of Next Ken Block
These days performance driving – insane drifting, if you will – is more popular than Formula 1 in the world of motorsports. So Ford launched the Octane Academy challenge, which is sort of like American Idol, but a bit more manly!
The idea is, fans will come up with videos of themselves performing cool tricks and submit them to the academy to be reviewed. Those who get elected will go to next round, involving on- and-off road challenges, running with Octane Academy’s founding members – Ken Block, Tanner Foust, Brian Deegan and Vaughn Gittin Jr.
This video submission thing will almost certainly result in lots of funny videos as well, of things going wrong for the participants trying to impress the judges. Can’t wait for that!
Four camps will be hosted over the course of the year, one by each founding member of Octane Academy. In each camp, contestants will go head-to-head in a battery of creative challenges and daunting dares over one long weekend. Ford’s action sports drivers will design their ultimate playground, hosting their respective elite winners on their terms and their turf. Each camp will give participants a crash course in how to fearlessly master the road while testing their attitudes, athleticism and audacity.
At the end there will be only on winner, who will get a one-of-a-kind vehicle created by Block, Foust, Deegan or Gittin Jr. and possibly becomes the next big thing in the sport.
The first fantasy camp will kick off in November, hosted by Ford RallyCross and Off-Road truck racer Deegan.

Britain West Motorsport, Canada's leading Formula Ford competition group, head to the beautiful hamlet of Mont Tremblant to take on the third round of the Quebec-based Formula Tour 1600 Series. The series has been off since the Montreal Grand Prix back in early June and many racers are anxious to go racing. This weekend marks the second weekend in a row for the Britain West squad as they completed a solid weekend at Shannonville Motorsport Park taking part in the Ontario Formula Ford Challenge during the DAC Trillium Cup event. The team had five cars on track testing on Friday with three drivers taking in the double-header race weekend. The three-car effort hit the podium four times over the weekend of very hot racing conditions. Gord Ross running in a B Class car would cross in sixth in the Saturday race, third in class. On Sunday Ross crossed in seventh place, again third in class and another trip to the podium. Steve Tzountzouris in his A Class car also hit the podium taking second on Saturday from his third place qualifying spot. On Sunday it was sixth at the line for the Uxbridge driver as he battled high engine temperatures. Formula Ford rookie Garett Grist, a member of the Sofina Foods Driver Development Program, took second in qualifying on Saturday but had his race cut short as he lost power while running in second place. On Sunday another front row start had Grist lead the first few circuits courtesy of a great outside lane start. Contact on lap five bent his front steering and the rookie driver had to relinquish the lead but held on for second place at the line. In the field for the Tremblant double-header weekend will be Britain West driver Nathan Blok of Pembrook, Ontario who leads the Formula Tour points following a great Canadian Grand Prix weekend. Joining Blok will be Grist who is eighth in the standings, the highest placing rookie. Grist looks to run well at Tremblant where he took his first win of the 2011 season last time out. Sergio Pasian of St-Jeanne d'arc, Quebec will field his Britain West prepared blue and silver Van Diemen as he sits in 12th in the championship. Rounding out the team is veteran campaigner Guy Gilian of St. Eustache, Quebec who holds onto 20th place in the overall championship. A fixture in the Canadian motorsports scene for nearly two decades, Britain West is the exclusive Van Diemen Chassis and Dunlop Tire importer for Canada. They also represent AimSport Mychron Data Systems, Penske Shocks and HANS Device.
