Drum Corps hosts event Aug. 1
The "part Broadway musical, part rock show, part circus and all-live musical adrenaline" of Drum Corps International is headed to the Lowcountry for the first time.
Carolina Crown, a drum and bugle corps based in Fort Mill, is teaming up with Summerville High School to host FirstBEAT, a night of performances from eight of the top groups in the nation Aug. 1.
Each summer, Drum Corps International, which bills itself as "marching music's major league," hosts a nationwide tour featuring 150 shows and covering 15,000 miles.
Eric Sabach, director of business development and marketing for Carolina Crown, said the performers are "considered pros" in the marching band world. Nearly 8,000 high school and college students audition every year for 3,500 positions.

The tour performs in large venues such as the Georgia Dome in Atlanta and the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., putting Summerville's John McKissick Field in elite company.
Summerville High's band students, boosters and parents will work the stadium's concession stands, ticket windows and parking lots.
The eight corps will practice at eight schools throughout the area before the big performance, and Julie Massey, the woodwind and marching instructor at Summerville High, says the students will be able to "watch the corps rehearse and interact with them during their breaks."
Sabach said this tour stop in South Carolina is a "great experience for the Lowcountry."
