Cyclists travel through region
VINTONDALE - In many ways, the C&I Trail represents a big reason why hundreds of sojourning cyclists chose the Cambria County area for their annual venture this week.
The planned hiking and biking trail loop, one stop of many in this week's ninth annual Greenway Sojourn's five-day Cambria and Indiana County area tour, allowed organizers to highlight what is already in place in this region - and what could be.
"There are great trails in this area or we wouldn't be here," said Tom Sexton, a tour director with the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, the sponsor, as fellow cyclists around him completed a preview of the not-yet-complete C&I Trail. "But [sojourn] riders look at themselves as pioneers. The goal is to come to an area like this and spur more trail growth, to make things happen and fill in the gaps."
More than 250 cyclists from as far as California toured the Ghost Town Trail and a roughly developed portion of the C&I, which follows the old Cambria and Indiana Railroad line.
When fully complete, the C&I would be the first local trail loop from Revloc to Belsano, Vintondale and west to Indiana County. It would link the Ghost Town Trail at both ends, allowing cyclists to travel in a trail circle rather than to a point and backtrack.
Cambria Conservation & Recreation Director Delores Columbus hopes this week's ride helps to make it happen.
The design is complete, but there's currently no funding in place to even finish a section of the trail, she added.
"There's bridges to replace and a viaduct that needs work along the 20-mile corridor, and it could cost $3 million if we relied on all state funding," she said. "But if someone stepped up and we were able to do it locally, perhaps through donations, it could be much more cost-effective."
Fellow organizers also pointed to the Path of the Flood Trail - another sojourn stop - as a recent success and other trails that could one day be a part of it, like an envisioned Mainline Trail from Portage.
Still, Sexton and other riders had plenty of praise for what's already in place here.
"What a great place in the world," said Mary Lou Swinerton of Medina, Ohio, praising the region's trail quality, communities and landscape. "This area is just wonderful. There's no doubt I'll be back."
"I'll be taking home some of the soil, too," she added with a laugh, pointing to her souvenir: a dirt-covered scrape from the C&I ride.
