Senate approves funding for Fla. carrier base
The Senate has approved $235 million in construction spending for Florida military bases.That includes $17 million for aircraft carrier facilities at Mayport Naval Station near Jacksonville.
The vote Thursday was another step toward moving a carrier from Norfolk, Va., to Mayport. The House has approved an identical amount.
A center that performs nuclear treaty monitoring and detection at Patrick Air Force Base near Cape Canaveral would get $79 million.
The plan includes special operations facilities valued at $15.2 million at MacDill Air Force base near Tampa and $49.5 million at Eglin Air Force Base in the Panhandle.
Jacksonville Naval Air Station would get $36.5 million for hangars and training facilities.
Whiting Field near Pensacola would get $20.6 million for a Navy bomb squad training facility.
