DOT: Roundabouts with increase in crashes still 'more safe'

Halloran said, "(One of the worst things you can do is) Changing lanes in the middle of the rotary. You gotta be aware that there's no one entering, because you could be at an entrance point to the rotary. So if you're changing lanes in the middle of it, that could cause an issue for someone entering, or someone that you don't see who's trying to exit." Even though some Capital Region roundabouts have higher accident rates than the "traditional intersections" that came before them, Breen said, "The fact that traffic is moving more slowly means crashes that happen in roundabouts are far less severe than high speed, head-on collisions and t-bone crashes, which tend to occur at traditional intersections." So, as one driver said-you have to be careful". You meany you do NOT have to be careful at other types of intersections ? Could that be why roundabouts have, on average, 80% OESS injury crashes and 90% less fatalities than other types of intersection control ? Driving 50 mph in a roundabout is insane. They should be designed so this is not possible. Although there are always some hot rodders or would be race drivers who figure out a way usually by cutting lane lines. Safe driving in a two lane roundabout is very little different than safe driving through a intersection with conventional traffic control and a two lane approach. In a conventional intersection. If you are turning right stay in the right Lane, if you are turning with you get in the left lane. You did not turn right from the left Lane or left from the right Lane. Also, you did not change lanes as you approach or as you are in the intersection, without looking carefully and seeing that you have an adequate gap, i.e space to safely do so. However, drivers seem to think they can do these things in a roundabout and they are the cause of many of the crashes. Fortunately the crashes are mostly low-speed (was shipped some not going 50 mph) fender benders. As a final note, they are roundabouts. They are not rotaries are traffic circles, many of which in the past – especially in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New Jersey and so forth – prove to be high-risk.

Windswept Adventure: The Miss Albany Diner - This Time It Was Open

I was nearing retirement age and dreaming about buying a farm on which to spend my future. I devoted several years to scouring the internet for the best buys anywhere in the country. I had no money, but I sure had dreams. Then I inherited some money and found a great deal in northern New York. It's a 3 bedroom, two bathroom farm house with 26 acres of hay fields and a giant old barn. I had a friend who fixes up old houses for a living, so he went up there renovated the old home. I hope to raise cattle, chickens and maybe miniature horses. But that's a few years away. For now I just go up on weekends when I'm not hiking or whatever. My blog tells the story in pictures. It had only been a bit more than an hour since I'd first arrived at the historic Miss Albany Diner and found it not yet open. I'd taken a walking tour of downtown Albany which then became a driving tour. It all seemed to have taken a very long time but was really only about an hour. So here I was back at the diner just after 9:00. They were open and I wanted breakfast, so in I went: I'd intended to have my breakfast and then attend the Unitarian Universalist Church in Albany which began at 10:00. With all the snafus involved with getting breakfast, I never thought I'd make it. But I drove to the church and arrived just as the service began. The Unitarian church is a popular spot with quite a large and active membership. As for me, I'd grown up in fundamentalist churches but had come to despise their reactionary, hate filled rhetoric and politics. Yet I missed the fellowship and spirituality so I'm giving the Unitarian church a try. So far so good. It's a prospering entity, growing by leaps and bounds and keeps adding on to their building. Everything you see in this photo is part of the church facility, including the modern brick and glass structure on the left. They just keep adding to it as they grow.
