Two dead as helicopter crashes in Sydney

Is forecast to be its wettest July in 52 years.

"A helicopter crashed in bushland. At this stage we can only confirm two dead, hopefully there are not more," said Acting Superintendent Michael Banfield, adding that they were still trying to track down the owners of the chopper.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said the helicopter involved was a Bell 206, which typically seats between five and seven people, including the pilot.

"The helicopter is a complete wreck," added Banfield.

"A number of witnesses said they saw a part fly off the back off the helicopter but I can't confirm that right now."

A witness told local radio he heard the helicopter flying very low and feared it was going to crash into a tennis and netball court complex in the area.

"I thought the helicopter was going to crash into the roof, but it went into the bush," he said.

"There's smoke coming up."

The crash came on a day of wild weather, with the local State Emergency Service receiving 560 calls for help in the 24 hours to Friday morning, with Sydney drenched by more than 80 millimetres (three inches) of rain.

AccuWeather.com - Weather News | Australian Storm Gives Sydney Its ...

Rain by the inch has pelted Australia's east coast since Tuesday, apparently leaving Sydney with its wettest July on record.

Torrential rain and strong winds unleashed by a coastal storm have caused chaos on roadways as high waves pounded the coast, The Australian reported on Thursday.

Rain triggered flooding from Sydney north to the Hunter Valley, but the storm, centered over the Tasman Sea, also hiked tides above normal along the shores of New South Wales.

Jake Phillips, a Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) forecaster, warned of dangerous high swells and serious erosion to beachfront homes, according to the report.

Wettest historical month of July at Sydney's Observatory Hill was that of 1959, when 196 mm (7.7 inches) of rain was collected, Phillips reportedly said.

At the time, rainfall this month was already 171 mm (6.7 inches), with more forecast. However, rain continuing across Sydney later boosted rainfall at Observatory Hill to at least 206.6 mm (8.13 inches), as shown by data available from the BoM. The Bureau's observations indicated that rainfall from the latest storm was at least 189.4 mm, or 7.46 inches, as of 12:30 a.m. Friday night, local time.

Storm rainfall at the Sydney International Airport was at least 151.6 mm, or 5.97 inches, the BoM's website also showed.

Elsewhere in the area, greater Sydney rainfall locally topped 8 inches, a fall of at least 223 mm (8.8 inches) being measured at Cronulla South.

Further rain through Friday will douse the New South Wales coast, padding the record-setting July tally in Sydney. High waves will continue to hammer the shore. The storm will pull slowly out to sea through Sunday, ending the rain and leading to calmer seas.

During extreme heat, the heat index can be used to measure how hot it will feel by combining air temperature and humidity. This number can also indicate possible health threats. A heat index between 94 and 104 degrees can cause heat cramps and possible sunstroke. If the heat index surpasses 125 degrees, there is extreme danger. These conditions increase the likelihood of heatstroke and sunstroke with even limited exposure.
