PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii — Organizers have held a traditional Japanese tea ceremony at the USS Arizona Memorial, the first time that the highly choreographed ritual has been performed on top of the battleship that sank 70 years ago in the attack on Pearl Harbor.
A Japanese tea master prepared two bowls of green tea — one each for attack victims and world peace - for the centuries-old art form that encourages contemplation and reflection.
Officials hope the ceremony Tuesday will promote world peace and reconciliation between the U.S. and Japan.
Three survivors of the Japanese attack attended, along with Adm. Patrick Walsh, commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, and other dignitaries.
Some 2,400 sailors, Marines and soldiers were killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.
