And in a nod to the purpose of the holiday, it will be patriotic: Marine Lt. Col. Jason Morris will be the guest speaker. He is the commanding officer of the 3rd Battalion, 5th Regiment, whose Marine unit recently returned from seven months active duty in Afghanistan. He will receive the 2011 Kenneth R. Norris Jr. Heritage of Freedom Award from the committee for his “significant national or international contribution to freedom.” Another honoree will be Harlyne J.Norris, who will receive the Van Dine Americanism Award, presented annually to a resident Peninsula "has contributed in a special way to the quality of life in America." Norris is president of the Norris Foundation, which funds many charities, including the celebration of Independence Day. The three winners of essay competition Herbert Albright will be reading their texts after receiving their prize. Eighty-one college and high school students have submitted entries, according to one of the officials who read them all. The topic was volunteerism and the role it will play or is already playing in the student’s life. Prizes were U.S. Savings Bonds and cash.Organized in 1961 by Palos Verdes Estates residents the late Bryan and Denise Hardwick and always supported by private donations, this year’s event is headed by Devon Hardwick, one of their children.

WILMINGTON -- The big screen at Thalian Hall was a fitting backdrop for a memorial service for Frank Capra, Jr. who is considered the founding father of Wilmington's film industry.
Capra passed away just before Christmas, but even in his absence the industry he helped build is going strong.
Capra first came to Wilmington in the early 80's scouting for the film, Firestarter.
He fell in love with the area and in 1997 he came back to run what became Screen Gems Studio, making it the largest TV and movie studio on the East Coast.
Officials at Screen Gems have not yet made any announcement about who will head up the studio, but some people say the industry will continue to thrive in Wilmington, thanks to Capra's work.
Even though Capra is gone, he leaves behind a legacy that will keep Wilmington on the big screen for years to come.
