A Raisin In The Sun Summary | Alisa Miller

Summary

A Raisin in the Sun is about a lower class African American family. This particular family strives to overcome all obstacles and make the best out of themselves. One day they received a life insurance policy check from Mama’s loved one. The plan was to put money towards the new house and Beneatha’s school fund. However, everything goes down the drain when Mama decides to give the money to Walter Lee. Walter gives Willie the insurance money to spend on the liquor license. Walter receives an unexpected visit from Bobo, one of his business partners. Bobo then tells Walter that Willie never showed up to Springfield, which means he pretty much took the money and left no road maps! We chose to act out this particular scene because of its significance in terms of the drastic turning point of the drama.

The overall view of this play is viewed as an unfortunate family who is given the chance to become something greater than ever before. A raisin in the sun play was created by Lorraine Hansberry. The title is derived from the poem “Harlem” by Lanston Hughes. This particular play takes place in the South of Chicago between World War II and the 1950s. The life insurance policy check plays a significant role in this play, it symbolizes the need and greed of each character.
