A field day for horse lovers at Twin Springs Ranch

High profile Canadian equestrian clinician Jonathan Field slid in for for five days of concentrated teaching last Friday and Alberta's summer sun gods decided after months of soggy rainfall to match favours, dishing out the very best of blistering blue skies.
Endless sunshine, enough wind to keep mosquitoes at bay and the smiles of those participating along with a raft of spectactors testified to this young man's deserved popularity across North America.
Jonathan Field is, he confirmed during a quick lunch break, on the road 175 days each year and life's been at that exhilarating pace these past five.
"It's just grown like crazy," he exclaimed, "getting home mind, I love that too," he grinned but as the conversation unfolds it's obvious the balance, to him, is well nigh perfect.
"I'm just passionate about teaching," he remarks, leaning forward, intent.
Some of that teaching is at clinics such as his second visit here to Twin Springs Ranch, north of Beaupre Hall westwards of Cochrane. Others are across North America, his spectacular The Mane Event demonstations or, as he describes, workshops at the family's Field Horsemanship Centre near Abbotsford, British Columbia.
Field's eyes light up as he describes the family's second enterprise, their James Creek Ranch, a 600-acre cattle ranch near Merit, B.C. Three weeks of the year has Jonathan, his wife Angie and team running full-on intensive camps run for the more advanced participants of his five-level programme.
"Challenge, purpose, fun," he explains, riding with a purpose in your mind is important."
He himself admits, interestingly, "I don't have a goal anymore. I let the horses present it to me."
As many who may have read his online biography may know, he suffered a very serious physical accident aged 19, one of those life defining moments that Oprah's team would nod at and immediately get a telephone fix for the next interview.
"If that hadn't happened," he shrugs, "I probably would have said horses would have been a part of my life a bit later in life. Because of that…….." The pause is poignant despite him probably describing this scene, his mind-set at the time, a thousand times.
"I realized I had to go for the commitment, the horses in my life now."
Combined with Twin Spring Ranch operator's meticulous attention to detail, the event's relaxed atmosphere produced endless smiles frankly a Crest toothpaste smile commercial would be proud of.
