On the two occasions of her second installation of the monumental work “Rhapsody” in the Atrium of MoMA and the recent exhibit The Studio Inside Out (May 18 – June 30, 2011) at Locks Gallery in Philadelphia, Rail publisher Phong Bui paid a visit to the painter Jennifer Bartlett’s home/studio in Fort Greene, Brooklyn to discuss her life and work.

Phong Bui (Rail): One of many memorable things that was brought up in the interview between you and Elizabeth Murray published in interview, I was so shocked by the scale of the paintings later when I saw the first real ones at the Art Institute of Chicago.  They were smaller than I thought. I was in fact disappointed.

Rail: They must have been the two paintings, “After Khorkum,” Gorky’s Miró-esque painting of the early ’40s (1940 – 42, 36 by 473/4 inches), and “The Plough and the Song ” an exquisite painting of his late, mature style, painted in 1947 (517/8 by 613/8 inches), a year before his death. I love everything Gorky ever made. Ellen Phelan feels the same way as I do.

Bartlett: I do, too. In the reproductions they look like much bigger paintings than when I saw them in the flesh.

Rail: Does that lessen your admiration of the work?

Bartlett: No, but I don’t think I’ve ever really made the adjustment.

Rail: I had a similar experience with Piero della Francesca’s painting “The Flagellation”:  How monumental it looked on the projected screen in art history class!  But when I finally saw it years later (1987) at the Galleria Nazionale della Marche in Urbino, it was tiny (about 24 by 32 inches).

Bartlett: Which is not true of his amazing fresco “Resurrection” at the Museo Civico of Sansepolcro (Piero’s hometown). It was by chance that I saw it. I was visiting a friend, the film director Volker Schlondorff, in Tuscany; he wanted to give me a summer treat (c. 1988). He took me to see a dumpy small museum. In the first room there were varnished dark paintings and in the second room Piero’s “Resurrection.” We walked right into the space.  There was no climate control.  The windows were totally open and it was fabulous. And that remains one of the nicest art experiences I have had in my life.

Rail: So how would you describe your sense of scale after those two encounters, one with Gorky’s and the other with Piero’s?

Two young intrepid explorers find their way into an abandoned mental hospital. While exploring the place they come across the body of a young girl in four point restraints naked on a bed. What do you think they are going to do? If you think they are going to call 911 and report it to the police so an investigation can happen, you thought wrong. This is one of the more disturbing morality plays that you can see in a movie. Better yet it is on Netflix so you can watch it to your heart’s content. The morality tale here is what do you do with a naked dead girl in four point restraints?

So these two boys do many things, from beating the girl, to shooting the girl, to raping the girl, and yet the girl cannot die. This is what makes it disturbing, rather than calling the authorities, the girl becomes a play thing, something to be used, abused, and tortured. The movie explores the base level of humanity, the humanity that creates torture, demonizes people, and otherwise reduces human life to less than something to be cherished and protected. The interesting part of all this is not the inhumanity, but what happens when Ricky and JT get infected by whatever is keeping the dead girl alive. We get to see zombies, with overtones of vampirism and being infected by the dead girl comes immediately to mind.

We also get to see JT’s girlfriend get killed and get turned into the next dead girl sex slave, along with a lot of other dead girl issues throughout the entire movie. We also get a brutal if not uncommon high school bullying scene that if you ever went to high school you either saw or participated in depending on where you ended up in the high school food chain.

Overall depending on where you are from and what your particular needs are in a horror movie, this one has a little bit of everything. Power, control, rape, murder, bullying, beating, strangulation, and a ton of other standard horror movie bits and pieces that truly work here. While jumping from the basement of the abandoned mental hospital back to scenes in the school makes the movie feel disjointed and random, the effect works here. You can see the characters struggle and then not struggle with the morality of finding a naked woman zombie in a basement in four point restraints. That is what keeps the movie interesting, and finding out that at times we will degenerate to our baser instincts will make some people cringe.

Love this movie. I’ve said many times , the lead protagonists became an annoyance to me by the time it ended lol.. when his buddy stuck a gun to him early I thought , what a douche his buddy is and poor guy. By the end , his buddy was a little crazy but loyal to his friends while poor guy was pussy whipped and he wasnt even getting the pussy!
