Redistricting: 2 parties, 2 philosophies
Only one of the names suggested by Russell in the July 12 hearing appeared on any of the lists submitted to the court -- Carson City Clerk/Recorder Alan Glover appears on Miller's proposed list. Russell had named Glover as a potential master representing rural election officials to serve with Washoe Registrar of Voters Dan Burk and Clark County Registrar Larry Lomax. He said his goal was to de-politicize the process as much as possible and put it in the hands of the experts. By contrast, the GOP list is led by Doug Johnson of Claremont McKenna College, who has consulted on an number of redistricting projects for states including Florida, Arizona and California. The GOP also recommends Gary King of Harvard, Bernard Grofman of UC-Irvine, also a consultant in numerous redistricting cases, and Nathaniel Persily of Columbia Law School. Persily also appears in the Democrats' proposal. While the secretary of state's filing confined itself to recommending potential masters, the two parties included recommendations on the process to be followed and the handling of legal issues, among other subjects. Both sides called for including members who are experienced in the nuts and bolts of redistricting. And both said the candidates should not be limited to Nevadans since, according to the Democratic brief, “there are a number of neutral, experienced professionals from across the country who may be able to bring a helpful perspective to Nevada redistricting.” They also agreed districts should be compact and contiguous, not irregularly shaped and disjointed, and that county lines, political subdivisions and “communities of interest” should be preserved. Democrats also urged that the masters attempt to “nest” two Assembly districts within the boundaries of each state Senate district.Republican Party Issues - News

But some are troubled by reports that Perry may not be as tough on immigration issues as they would like. "If he's not strong on immigration, I've got a real problem," said Jim Carley of Altoona, Iowa, president of Save Our American Republic,

The Republican Party, in contrast, presented a list that included out-of-state academics and consultants and nationally known experts with extensive experience and credentials in redistricting. The Las Vegas Valley League of Women Voters also filed a

The motivated, far-right base of the Republican Party/Tea Party can, at best, pull in about a quarter to a third of the larger electorate. In addition, West became the Definer: He blocked out the issues, agitated his base, and got people to the polls.

In that world, The Party of No is lagging far behind. Its marketing prowess is relatively archaic. In my book, The Right is Wrong, I repeatedly reference examples of the Republican Party's political ineptitude in its own National Platform.

Former Louisiana Governor Buddy Roemer announced Thursday at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire that he will officially run for the Republican Party's presidential nomination in 2012. Roemer, who had explored a bid for the past several months,
Tea Partiers Not Focused On The Most Important Issues
Senator Jim Demint has expressed a concern that has been bothering me for quite some time. The tea party, although scattered and leaderless, had a focus on the most important issues during last year’s elections, but now uses their time on issues that do not concern the nation.
After last year’s elections, many tea partiers, already involved with the Republican Party, became delegates to the party convention, hoping to make some changes to the party itself. The leadership of the party treated the tea party folks as a part of their coalition, happily accepting their message of fiscal conservatism, and suggested they would better use their time educating people on the founding.
Some tea party organizers saw an opportunity, shameless as it were, to make a name for themselves politically to better their standing amongst their peers. They worked tirelessly to promote themselves as ‘tea party leaders’ and enjoyed the power that came from being able to discuss the future of the Republican Party with the party elite. They were the people to go to when the party needed to calm the waters between tea party anger and the ever-left-leaning Republican ranks. Happy with their new found power, they lost sight of the whole reason they organized in the first place.
The Republican Party made the overtures necessary to get the tea party on board, and many tea partiers, right now, are happy go-along-to-get-along Republicans.
Not all tea partiers are doing so, many still are focused on forcing the Republican Party to become more conservative, and fighting the elites by arguing their case in front of the American people, but sadly, many tea partiers are just happy with what they’ve accomplished, no more action necessary. As if their presence within the Republican Party is enough to prove their point.
After fighting to win the elections last year, the tea party ‘leaders’ have focused mainly on State issues. Right to Work legislation is key here Michigan, and although important to the State’s future, the moderate Republican Governor Rick Snyder has expressed no interest in allowing it to go anywhere, which makes the tea partiers even more interested in making him pay attention.
Meanwhile, our nation is involved in the most epic battle in Washington DC, with a President and his Democrat Party insisting on raising taxes for the entire nation, saying it over and over again, in an admission that tax and spend liberals don’t even care how they are coming off to the average citizen, and the tea party ‘leaders’ are off on their ego trip.
