Julia Hurley Is A Threat To Grumpy Old Men

I was raised by a strong Republican woman - my mother. Her late mother, my grandmother, was a strong Republican woman. While we enjoy the great leadership of women like Tennessee Speaker of the House Beth Harwell and Congressman Marsha Blackburn, until recent years, they would have been considered great exceptions.

Still today, if women don’t follow the political path set up by conventional wisdom (i.e. men), then somehow they are considered less serious and are more likely to be criticized and attacked. Of course, if that Republican woman is attractive, she must be stupid or lack morals or…add any other insult here.

In the last year I have become a fan of state Rep. Julia Hurley, not solely for the good job she has done in Nashville, but for the things she has had to endure.

One of the great privileges in my life is to serve as legal counsel to the Tennessee Federation of Republican Women. It is often the women, the wives, sisters, daughters and friends who get so much accomplished within our Republican Party. I would bet the Democrats have some of the same experiences.

In working with so many Republican women and candidates who happen to be women over the years, perhaps I have grown too sensitive to attacks on them. Perhaps, and the more likely scenario, is that many men, Republicans and Democrats, do not like the independence of female leaders and the less likelihood those women can be dissuaded from their ideals by politics and money.

I write this today because I am a little angry. State Rep. Julia Hurley has been subjected to the kind of criticism and innuendo normally reserved for someone running for congress or for statewide office since the day she announced she was seeking the office of State Representative for the 32nd District.

Yes, state Rep. Julia Hurley is attractive, yes she worked at Hooters, and yes she did some modeling. So what? Does anyone ever mention that she had a child at young age and then went on to college to get a degree in business? Does anyone ever mention she is a small business owner that uses both her education and her knowledge of her generation (She is not yet 30) to market and sale leisure products that are used by tens of millions of people? Do they mention that she has one of the most conservative voting records in Nashville?
