Band Profile: Empty Pockets combines rock, jazz

We sound like: We play rock ’n’ roll with some elements of jazz — nothing too technical or academic, just some subtle hints. Dan Maguire writes the songs, and some of his biggest influences have been Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Scott Alan Smith (Dan’s college music professor), Eric Lindell and basically anything else that he has heard on the radio that enhances life’s experiences. This is why our tagline is “Rock got the blues, and jazz infused.” We think that sums up what we do pretty well. Coolest story from a show: That actually refers to all of our shows. Just recently we finished our three-song demo, so we have been getting booked without a demo. We did this by talking our way into our first few shows, getting as many people as possible to show up and treating every show with the importance one would give to an audition. That’s part of our band philosophy — every show is an audition, no matter how many times we play at a particular place. Where would you love to play someday? We want to think outside the bar. We love the bars, but we know there are a lot more places to play. Empty Pockets’ music reaches across the musical spectrum from light fingerpicking and mellow jazzy songs to driving rock ’n’ roll. We practice every week, and we split these practices so we do acoustic twice a month and electric twice a month. Because we have the music we do and because we rehearse the way we do, we have the opportunity to play places that most music projects can’t. We are a rock ’n’ roll band, but we don’t want to get pigeonholed into specific venues. There are plenty of places to play for bands that have the appropriate music and prepare for different venues. We are that band.
